WHAT ARE WISDOM TEETH?
Wisdom teeth are also known as “third molars.” They erupt into the oral cavity in the late teens or early twenties. By the time these teeth erupt into the oral cavity, jaws may not have adequate space to accommodate, which may result in partial eruption, complete embedment in bone, or even erupt in the wrong position, causing pressure on adjacent teeth and gums.

Pericoronitis
Partially erupted wisdom teeth may get bacterial Infections known as pericoronitis. This causes severe pain and swelling of the gums and sometimes, the face.
Development of Cyst and Tumors
Development of Dentigerous cyst may occur around unerupted wisdom teeth, leading to the destruction of bone and gums

Infected wisdom teeth may be associated with bad breath, pus discharge, and difficulty in mouth opening.

WHEN DO WISDOM TEETH IS

When wisdom teeth erupt partially and are not accessible for tooth cleaning.

When it gets infected and causes severe pain.

When wisdom teeth erupt in the wrong position and cause damage to adjacent teeth and soft tissues.

When partially erupted or teeth decayed.

A final set of dentures is fixed, and an inspection of the fitting is done to check if any adjustment is required.
The procedure used for the removal of wisdom teeth depends on the position and its angulation in the bone. Sometimes they require open surgical extraction.
Radiographs are taken to localize the position of teeth in the bone. Once the evaluation is done, anaesthesia will be given. In some patients, it may require conscious sedation or general anaesthesia for the removal of third molars. The oral surgeon will raise the flap from the gum tissue and, if necessary, bone-cutting to expose the wisdom teeth. Then, the tooth is removed with forceps. The flap is repositioned, and sutures are placed. The sutures are removed after one week.

Do not rinse or spit for the next 24 hours after the extraction.

Don’t disturb extraction socket with fingers and tongue

Apply ice pack over the operated side for every 20 minutes once for next 48 hours

Drink cold beverage after removal of cotton from extraction socket (do not use a straw)

Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

Do not smoke and don't consume alcohol for the next week.

Use ice packs on the surgical area (side of the face) for the first 48 hours.

After 24 hours, rinse the mouth with warm salt water or mouthwash to flush out debris from the operated site.

Eat a soft diet for a few days and avoid spicy foods

When they are embedded deep in the bone and do not cause any signs and symptoms.

When they are remarkably close to large nerves and blood vessels.
